What are the Differences Between Cage and Box Trailers?
On the face of it, it’s probably easy to assume box trailers and cage trailers do the same thing. They all offer plenty of security and are great at enclosing valuable cargo. However, when it comes to actually buying a trailer, you might find it tricky to differentiate between the two.
In our complete introduction to cage and box trailers, we discuss some of the similarities. However, in this brief overview, we’re going to consider some of their significant differences. What should you buy? A cage trailer or a box trailer? Let’s take a closer look and try to narrow down your choice.
Box Trailers Are Weatherproof
By this, we mean that there are no gaps or holes in a full box trailer if you buy one with a roof on top. A cage trailer, by design, has plenty of little gaps and holes which are likely to let the weather in. While good cage trailers should have galvanisation as standard, you are much more likely to brave the elements more effectively with a box.
There’s also the matter of small items falling out. A solid cage trailer should, of course, keep everything inside. However, you might feel a bit safer with a box.
Cage Trailers Are Ideal for Livestock
You shouldn’t ideally buy a box trailer for livestock unless you can guarantee light and ventilation. You can purchase horse boxes, for example, which are built with animals in mind.
However, many Australians prefer to buy cage trailers. Cages are strong, durable, and you can easily see what is inside. It may also be less stressful for any animals in transit to travel in a cage. You may not assume so, but locking an animal up in a dark box isn’t going to be fun.
You Can Advertise on a Box Trailer
While you can probably hang something on a cage trailer if needed, you can fully personalise a box. You can place print logos and contact details, for example, on the side. Therefore, you’re not only moving cargo, but you’re also advertising your business!
Buying a box trailer may, therefore, have more of a benefit to you if you want to drum up trade. Once you buy a box trailer, it is yours to paint or decorate as you wish.
Both Are Secure – In Their Own Ways
People buy box trailers and cage trailers for security and ease of access. However, both systems are secure in differing ways.
For example, you may not want to buy a cage trailer if you have lots of sensitive cargo. Displaying it for everyone to see is not a good idea. There is, however, a school of thought that assumes cage trailers are tougher by design. They automatically come with roofing, which you won’t always get with a box.
Regardless of the type of trailer you need, you should take a careful look at your options to narrow down your choice. Take a look at our online guides for more information!
